2027 cornerback prospect Davon Dericho recently had a conversation with Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders, making Colorado an attractive early option with his recruitment.
Appalachian State, Bowling Green, FIU, Florida State, Indiana, Louisville, Maryland, Pittsburgh, UCF, USF, Western Michigan and West Virginia are other programs that have extended an early offer to the Miami (Fla.) Killian junior.
"Recruiting has been great," Dericho told BuffStampede.com. "Being offered by Deion Sanders was wonderful. I was excited. I never expected I would be offered by Deion Sanders personally.
"I spoke to Colorado and they said they loved my film, then they put Coach Prime on the phone. It is nothing but work now. It is crunchtime now, so I have to put in the work to get to where I want to be."
Dericho plans to visit Boulder in the spring, and he also plans to take trips to see UCF and West Virginia.
"I only have one date set so far. I am going out to West Virginia on March 7," he said. "I want to get to know the coaching staff there, get around campus and see what it is like around Morgantown.
"With UCF, the new coaching staff came to my school and re-offered me. They sat down with me and talked to me about some real stuff. That kind of changed my mind to want to take a trip up there. I have been up there before. I was offered by (former Knights cornerbacks coach) Brandon Harris but he ended up leaving and going to Florida. I was going to end up committing there, but he left, so then my mind kind of changed."
In 20 varsity games at Killian, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound Dericho has recorded 98 tackles, 19 stops for a loss, nine sacks, four interceptions and he had three fumble involvements.
"I am going to always work," Dericho said. "I am going to do whatever it takes to win and develop as a man and as a player, on and off the field. My dad and my coach push me the most. That's what gives me motivation to be great."
Dericho also stars as a track athlete at Killian, running the 100-meter dash and participating on the Cougars 4x1-relay team. They have their first track meet of the season this Thursday.
"Last year at regionals, I ran (the 100) in 10.97-seconds but they said it didn't count and counted it as an 11.1," Dericho recalled. "So I want to run a low 10.9. The way I have been training, I know that I am capable of running that."
