The Colorado women’s basketball team demolished Division II Adams State in a preseason exhibition at the CU Events Center on Tuesday.
The final score was 100-39.
Funnily enough, the Grizzlies actually scored the first bucket of the night. They took a 2-0 lead on a Trinity Spears score. But that was the best it got for Adams State.
The Buffs’ defense forced 27 turnovers, which turned into 39 points. And when Adams State didn’t turn the ball over, it only made 14-of-49 (28.6%) field goal attempts.
If CU surrendered every offensive possession unless it followed a forced turnover, the game would have headed to overtime.
The game did include all offensive possessions, though. So, the taller Colorado shot 36-of-77 (46.8%) from the field and won by 61 points.
The Black-and-Gold had a height advantage and scored easily inside. It racked up 48 points in the paint and drew 27 free-throw attempts. Naturally, the perimeter was wide open, and CU shot 10-of-20 (50.0%) on 3-pointers.
The Buffs gobbled up misses from both teams; 30 of their 57 rebounds came on offense, resulting in 28 more field-goal attempts and 16 more free-throw attempts.
Plus, they did so without Big 12 preseason honorable mention Zyanna Walker and Kansas State transfer Aniya’ Foy.
“Really proud of how our team played tonight in an exhibition game,” CU head coach JR Payne said to begin her post-game presser. “You're just trying to get loose and see what works, see what doesn't work. We played with lots of different combinations of rotations and people in different spots. Really proud of how hard we played.”
Four stars:
Mecailin Marshall - 20 pts, 8-16 FG, 3-4 3PT, 1-1 FT, 5 rebs, 1 tov, 2 stls, +24 (21 min.)
The 2026 American Conference Freshman of the Year showed out in Black-and-Gold threads. Mecailin Marshall led her new team in scoring with an efficient 20 points. She matched the team’s high in 3-point makes, shooting 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
Beyond her scoring, the 5-foot-10 guard grabbed five rebounds and two steals.
Logyn Greer - 18 pts, 6-12 FG, 3-5 3PT, 3-4 FT, 10 rebs, 1 ast, 3 tovs, 1 stl, +29 (19 min.)
6-4 Logyn Greer posted a double-double on Tuesday.
She was the second-leading scorer with 18 points and showcased her jump shot. She was 3-of-5 on 3-pointers. The second-year was also active inside, grabbing 10 rebounds (five offensive).
Greer only had one double-double last season (12 pts, 12 rebs vs. Miami (OH)).
Kira Reynolds - 3 pts, 1-7 FG, 1-2 FT, 11 rebs, 1 ast, 3 blks, +45 (21 min.)
While the former UT-Arlington forward scored just three points on 1-of-7 shooting, Kira Reynolds led the Buffs in plus-minus at plus-45. The 6-2 Reynolds contributed greatly, leading the game with 11 rebounds (five offensive). Indiana’s all-time high school girls’ shot-blocker also swatted Adams State thrice.
Anete Adler - 15 pts, 7-10 FG, 1-1 FT, 8 rebs, 1 ast, 1 blk, 1 stl, +32 (14 min.)
The fifth-year Boston transfer made the most of her 14 minutes, specifically in the third quarter. She rattled off 11 of her 15 points, grabbed four offensive rebounds and blocked a shot in her four third-period minutes.
Others…
Upperclassmen guards Maeve McErlane and Brooke Walker led the team in assists; both finished with four. As a team, CU ended with 18 dimes.
Freshman guard Cail Jahnke scored 15 points (5-6 FG, 2-2 3PT, 3-6 FT). While the brunt of her scoring came in the fourth quarter, she seemed to find her footing on the Russell “Sox” Walseth hardwood.
What’s next…
With complete domination from (almost the very) start to finish, Colorado will take on Morgan State at the CU Events Center on Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. MT on ESPN+.
