About Mathis

Kevin Mathis joined Colorado in December 2022 as cornerbacks coach and was named defensive pass game coordinator before the 2025 season. In 2026, he transitioned to coaching the nickel position while retaining his coordinator duties.

Mathis has played a central role in Colorado’s secondary, including the development of Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. He has also coached DJ McKinney and Carter Stoutmire as they emerged as key contributors in the Buffaloes’ defensive backfield.

Before coming to Boulder, Mathis coached defensive backs at Jackson State, where the Tigers led the FCS in pass efficiency defense in 2021 and 2022. He helped recruit and develop Hunter and coached All-SWAC defensive backs Shilo Sanders, Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig and Isaiah Bolden.

A Gainesville native from the Lone Star State, Mathis was a three-time Division II All-American at Texas A&M-Commerce before playing 10 NFL seasons. He appeared in 115 games for Dallas, New Orleans and Atlanta and was inducted into the Texas A&M-Commerce Hall of Fame in 2009.
