Seasons at CU
Damon Greaves joined Colorado ahead of the 2025 season after two years at Kansas, but his football story began thousands of miles from the traditional American path to college football.
A native of Busselton, Western Australia, Greaves grew up playing Australian rules football and was selected by Hawthorn in the 2019 AFL rookie draft. He played 10 AFL games before transitioning to American football through Prokick Australia and eventually landing at Kansas.
Greaves quickly became one of Colorado’s more distinctive personalities as well as its punter. Coach Prime and his teammates affectionately dubbed him “new mate,” following fellow Australian CU punter Mark Vassett’s “old mate” nickname.
Greaves has called his father his biggest role model, crediting him with teaching him how to live and guiding him through life. And despite crossing the world to play college football, his allegiance remains clear: when Kansas asked him about his hometown, Greaves simply described Australia as “the best place on Earth.”
