Daniel Gerlach’s route to Colorado brought him all the way from Boulder High School to Maine and eventually right back home.
After spending a season punting at Colby College, Gerlach returned to Boulder and earned his opportunity with the Buffaloes through a private tryout in 2024. For the hometown specialist, joining CU carried meaning beyond simply finding another place to play.
Gerlach recalled watching the energy around Colorado football change after Deion Sanders arrived and wanting to be part of it in whatever way he could. After earning his spot, he eventually handled Colorado’s primary kickoff duties during the second half of the 2024 season.
The Boulder native had already established himself as both a kicker and punter at Boulder High, making his college journey an unusual full-circle story: leaving home to begin his career, then earning his way onto the team playing practically in his own backyard.
