Toby Anene joined Colorado in 2026 after four seasons at North Dakota State, where he developed into an experienced defensive end and helped the Bison win an FCS national championship.
The St. Paul native was a two-way athlete at East Ridge High School, playing running back and defensive end while also earning all-conference honors and serving as a team captain in track and field. He later became a multi-year starter at North Dakota State and twice earned Missouri Valley Football Conference Honor Roll recognition.
Anene describes his opportunity at Colorado as a blessing and brings a decidedly team-first approach with him. Rather than focusing on individual expectations, he has talked about wanting to be the best “one-eleventh” he can be for the defense, bring physicality and help younger players develop.
He considers himself more of a lead-by-example personality, preferring preparation, consistency and one-on-one conversations to being the loudest voice in the room.
