How We Work
Statement of Editorial Independence
BuffStampede is editorially independent of the University of Colorado, its athletics department, and any outside organization. No coach, official, sponsor, or advertiser has any say in what we cover, how we cover it, or what conclusions we reach.
Editorial Independence
BuffStampede was founded on a single principle: the journalism stands on its own. We are not affiliated with the University of Colorado, its athletics department, or any larger media organization. No external party — coaches, administrators, sponsors, or advertisers — has any influence over our story selection, reporting, or conclusions. Coverage decisions are made by our editorial team, full stop.
Impartiality
We cover CU athletics seriously — and that means holding the program to the same standards we would apply to any beat. Some of our writers are CU alumni. Some are not. What they share is a commitment to reporting the story accurately, not the story that makes anyone look good. We celebrate the history and future of this program, but we are not a fan site, and we never will be.
Sourcing & Attribution
We name our sources whenever possible. When we rely on anonymous sources, it is because the source faces a genuine risk of retaliation or the information could not otherwise be obtained. Anonymous claims require corroboration from at least one additional source before publication. We describe the nature of anonymous sources — for example, "a person with direct knowledge of the situation" — so readers can weigh the information themselves.
Corrections Policy
We get things wrong sometimes. When we do, we fix it quickly and say so clearly. Corrections are noted within the article itself — what was wrong, and what the correct information is. We do not quietly edit published work without disclosing the change.
Conflicts of Interest
Writers and editors disclose any personal relationships, financial interests, or other circumstances that could affect their coverage of a given subject. When a genuine conflict exists, that story goes to a different writer.
Advertising & Sponsorships
Advertisers and sponsors have no input into what we cover, how we frame stories, or what we conclude. Commercial relationships exist entirely outside the newsroom. Any sponsored content is clearly labeled and visually distinct from editorial work.
Fairness & Right of Reply
When our reporting reflects negatively on an individual or organization, we make a genuine effort to reach them for comment before we publish. Their response is included in the story. If they decline to comment, we say so.
Social Media
Personal social media accounts of BuffStampede staff represent their own views, not the editorial positions of this outlet. All staff are expected to hold themselves to the same standards of accuracy and fairness on social media as they do in published work.
