While speculation has circulated about who will lead the Buffaloes after the bye against No. 11 Utah, Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders made it clear at Tuesday’s press conference.
“Isaac [Wilson] is starting; you guys know Isaac’s starting,” Sanders said.
Wilson will be slated to make his second career start for Colorado when facing off against his former team. Even after a three-interception performance in his last outing, Sanders had confidence in his mentality to rebound.
“Isaac is just tough. His demeanor is: Isaac throws a few picks, he's still going,” Sanders said. “He's not getting down on himself. He's a fighter. He's tough.”
This season he’s completed 40 passes for 443 yards and two touchdowns. Although he’s turned the ball over, his willingness to fire the ball downfield is something Colorado can work with. An additional factor in keeping Wilson as the starter is his ability to take the coaching given to him.
Coach Prime shared a joke he had made with Wilson as he left the elevator during the bye week.
“I said, ‘Isaac, make sure you throw the ball to the guys on our team.’ See, we could joke like that because Isaac is one of those kids,” Sanders said. “ He ain't taking that to heart. He's not going to cry or have a pity party because that's the balance of our relationship. We could get down like that.”
Wilson will have the edge in knowing the defense he is going against and having two weeks to prepare. Getting a second chance to lead the Black and Gold, he will have to capitalize on his opportunity.
If he doesn’t, the Buffs have two other capable quarterbacks who will be eager to get in.
