Heading into his third season of college football, Joseph Williams chose to return to Colorado despite a 3-9 record in the Black and Gold a year ago.
At 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Williams found 489 receiving yards to go along with four touchdowns in the 10 games he played. That was good enough for second on the team, and with the transfer portal looming, he had the option to leave.
Instead, he chose the hard route and decided to stick it out in Boulder. Why? Because of his relationship with wide receiver coach Rashad Davis.
“I would probably say the biggest reason I stayed at Colorado is probably Coach Shad. He helped that decision,” Williams said. “He's someone I could fall back onto when I know I need someone to look at, someone that could help me grow, not only as a player, but as a man.”
At the start of fall camp, Davis was promoted to head receivers coach after coach Jason Phillips stepped down. His ability to connect with players is what makes him a strong leader for a loaded receiving room.
He will have to rely on guys like Williams to teach the young players the standard at Colorado. Davis pitched for Williams to stay, knowing what he brings in the locker room and on the gridiron.
“When you talk about Joseph, now you're touching my heart. He’s like a little brother to me and a son to me,” Davis said. “We had some really close conversations, and I couldn't be more happy that he decided to continue to play with his brothers here at Colorado and finish his career here.”
Although he was injured during spring ball, Williams is fully healthy and ready to contribute for the Buffaloes again this fall. He has bought into the culture of being a Buff and is another weapon in the receiving room.
Williams will be a big part of the Buffs’ offense this season and will have the chance to showcase his talent in the “Go-Go” scheme.
“It's exciting for him,” Davis said. “To have a guy like that back, what he did last year, and then just looking for: Where is he going in the future?”
